But is Jesus not also thinking of his Apostles and companions who have deserted him, to Peter who has denied him three times, to the fickle crowd who only days before praised him on his entrance to Jerusalem, and then days later demanded his crucifixion? Their preservation is probably due more to the presence the women at the crucifixion than to that of the men for we hear of John alone of the disciples being present at the Cross. 6th Saying: "It is finished!" Luke 23:46. 12Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. One is struck by the anguished tone of this expression in contrast to the first three words of Jesus. He's the king of Israel! For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors (Isaiah 53:12). Many can't understand such grace given to the penitent thief for he never had time to do any good works, nor was he baptized, but Christ said that his faith in Jesus that day was sufficient. Evil triumphs, as Jesus admits: "But this is your hour" (Luke 22:53). The real Jesus is just too threatening to established religious power that resists change. "Forgive them" … Jesus also thirsts in a spiritual sense. John is the only Evangelist to record Our Lord's mother Mary at the Cross. Pilate instructed that the sign be written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek with the words JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. We can presume that he died at some point. 16Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet (Psalm 22:7-8; 12-13; 16). 20Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. With this last saying, Jesus gave up His spirit. The Good Friday Service might be called "Seven Expressions of Jesus," Seven Sayings of Jesus," or by some other title. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Jesus said on the cross what needed to be said. We all have to make choices as to which one we wish to be like at our death. This was granted because even at the hour of his death, the criminal had expressed his faith in Jesus, recognizing Him for who He was (Luke 23:42). One may meditate on the Passion of Christ by reflecting on his Seven Words on the Cross or by a devotion known as The Way of the Cross. It is worth noting that the anointed priest of Israel had to completely burn up the sin offering of Israel, i.e., the sacrificial burnt offering, outside the camp (Leviticus 4:21). 17Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). The Way of the Cross. 6. It is now a fait accomplit. Some hymns are also suggested in the Appendix. We all have to make choices as to which one we wish to be like at our death. Revelation 21:5, "Jesus said to his mother: "Woman, this is your son." It is possible that Jesus spoke more words than these during the six hours He hung on the Cross, but these are all that have been preserved for us. Each of us is like one of them. At the Last Supper, Christ announces he would ask the Father to send "another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth" (14:16-17). (John 19:30). With John, there is always significance with the little details. Jesus was crucified with two others, one on either side of Him. The Seven Sayings of Christ on the Cross We will now think about the seven last sayings of Christ on the cross. As He pushed Himself up, the gaping wounds in His back scraped against the wooden upright. The Lord was probably taken back into the Roman barracks, and a squad of four soldiers would have been assigned to crucify Him. They were playing games and unconcerned about His suffering. There were four reasons the Romans used crucifixion as a form of punishment: 1) the death was agonizing, 2) the process of crucifixion was slow, 3) it could be observed publicly, and 4) it was humiliating and served as a deterrent to crime and rebellion. This statement was also prophesied by King David, saying, "My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth" (Psalm 22:15). This division of garments and the casting of lots for Christ's seamless garment were just as David had prophesied hundreds of years before (Psalm 22:18). THE SEVEN WORDS OF JESUS ON THE CROSS - In observance of Good Friday, we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. We too are all alone at the time of death! He suffered an indescribable end, recalled by the Church on Good Friday of Holy Week. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. Some believe that Christ spoke the whole psalm while on the cross. What will you do with the full pardon offered to you by the Chief Justice—the God of the Universe?[5]. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Translated as it is finished in many translations in English, this is not a shout of weariness, but a great victory. I would remind you that salvation is bestowed to the believer as a gift, not by any works of righteousness we have done (Titus 3:5, Ephesians 2:8-9). When the Israelites were slaves to Pharaoh and Egypt, the means of deliverance was the blood of a pure and perfect lamb whose blood was to be shed and placed in a basin at the bottom of the door. We know that He recited part of it. Pilate realized it was out of envy that they handed him over (Matthew 27:18, Mark 15:10). 17I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. Pilate responded to them, saying. He sees the soldiers who have mocked, scourged, and tortured him, and who have just nailed him to the cross. 28Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." When religious pilgrimages to the Holy Land ended with military occupation of Jerusalem in the Middle Ages, a popular devotion known as The Way of the Cross arose during Lent recalling events in the Passion, Crucifixion, and Death of Jesus. In the final hours of His earthly time, as Jesus hung on the Cross, He made seven statements – each teaching us more about Jesus and His character. The terms brother and sister in Hebrew or Aramaic at that time could mean either biological sibling, cousin or kinsman, or a spiritual brother or sister. If you ever doubted the love and compassion of God, you should memorize those words. He wanted nothing to dull His senses at the crucial time.
